Importing a car from Korea to the UAE
A ten-year age allowance, the fastest Gulf sailing times, and why Jebel Ali is usually the right port.
The UAE is the most straightforward Gulf market to import into, and the cheapest to reach from Korea. Used passenger vehicles are allowed up to ten years old — double what Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar permit — which opens up a great deal of stock that simply cannot go elsewhere.
Jebel Ali is the fastest destination we ship to anywhere in the Gulf: sixteen days from Korea at around $1,120 ocean freight. Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi runs seventeen days, Zayed Port and Khalid Port in Sharjah eighteen, and Hamriyah nineteen. For most buyers Jebel Ali is the right answer on both cost and speed.
Left-hand drive is required, as everywhere in the region. A GCC conformity certificate is needed before shipment and we arrange it with the export paperwork. Vehicles with a recorded structural repair history face additional scrutiny at inspection, so we screen the Korean performance-check record before quoting.
The wider age allowance changes what is worth buying. In a five-year market you are limited to nearly new stock at nearly new prices; at ten years the value sits in well-kept cars from the middle of that range — a six or seven year old Genesis or Palisade with a clean inspection sheet, at a fraction of what the same car costs locally.
Total time from confirmation to collection is typically three to five weeks, the shortest of any market we serve. Sixteen days of that is sailing; the rest is Korean-side processing and clearance at Jebel Ali, which is efficient by regional standards when your broker has the documents ahead of arrival.
